MYSTERY GAME

The Dark Mansion. Whatever name this foreboding, gargantuan dwelling originally had has been lost to history. It does not appear to have been legally inhabited for around 50 years, yet few things about it seem to ever decay, past the point of giving it a weathered and ominous look. It has stood firm, its facades have not been marred and its treasures have not been plundered – for very good reason, most would say.

All kinds of stories float around for miles, all of them weaving different but equally harrowing tales of peril and unearthly horror. Is it stricken by an occult curse? A portal to whatever religion's hell? A sentient
genius loci? Simply something hallucinogenic in the air? No one knows. What is known is that it seems to inexorably attract anyone who hears about it. From restless adventurers to average joes to unsavory characters, people of all stripes seek it out - ragtag groups with nothing in common before they converge on the mansion. What they all have in common after their stay at the mansion is that their lives are irrevocably changed, should they be lucky enough to keep them, and the stories of dread and danger start to emerge from their lips as well. But like clockwork, the warnings just serve to further entice a new generation of explorers. And so it has been, ever since it's sudden, surreptitious abandonment by a wealthy family all those years ago.

But this time is different.

Something has been broadcast from the Mansion. A gut feeling, a psychic spike...some kind of sense of danger has swept over all those who have been within its clutches, a warning that whatever happens this time will the deadliest event yet. Already the latest assemblage of curious souls are gathering around the mansion, in greater numbers than ever before, some of them contaminated with an ancient evil looking to satisfy its hunger. They are joined by some who have been inside before, who felt a sense of duty to avert the coming crisis. Swallowing their fear and calling upon newfound power, they venture into these walls once again, to protect the innocents that could otherwise swiftly meet their end. What kind of darkness lies within for this group of wayfarers and brave souls is unknown. Only one thing is certain...

It's going to be one hell of a ride.

INCOMING TRANSMISSION:

This game is somewhere in between a normal game and a faction game. No funny item or area business: all there is in this are roles and their interactions. However, in the way things have been designed, how the aims of each faction differ and intertwine, people furthering their agendas to achieve their win conditions will be more than enough to make an interesting game. Don't assume that just because you draw a relatively plain role that you can't be a key player. You can.

Deals between players may be made, broken, and remade. Backs may be stabbed. Allegiances will be tested. Independent thought and investigation is highly encouraged; it could mean the difference between victory and defeat.

GIVEN THE NATURE OF THIS GAME, THERE ARE SOME RULES YOU MAY NOT BE USED TO. PAY CLOSE ATTENTION.

ICEBREAKER PHASE

This is a stage unique to this game, and it will last 48 hours.

On the start of the Icebreaker stage, the names of all factions in the game will be revealed in thread. (Keep in mind that any solo, self-aligned roles will not be included in the list.) All players will vote on which faction they would like to see more information about. The faction that received the most votes will have their aims and powers publicly revealed and then Night 1 will begin.

DEADLINES:

This game will have a 48-hour deadline for Nights. To keep things running smoothly, though, I will allow for Accelerated Nights. If, during the game, you are interested in ending any Night early, please PM me your assent. All players must notify me that they wish to end Night early, otherwise the Night will end at the time originally designated.

Days will have Player-Pool-Dependent Deadlines. This system has the following features:

  • Days will have a minimum deadline of 2 IRL days.
  • Days can last up to N/5 days, where N is the number of players alive at the start of the day. This will round to the nearest whole number.

This is to give everyone a fair chance at forming reads on such a large playerbase. Extensions shall not be granted for days. At 12 players or less, Days default to the minimum 2 days.

Extensions shall be given at my sole discretion, and I highly doubt they will be truly necessary. If you wish to appeal for an extension during the game, you must do so PRIVATELY, via PM, and clearly state the reason. Extensions are special cases – do not try to negotiate for longer (or shorter) deadlines.

VOTING:

Players may vote for No Lynch. If No Lynch wins the vote, the game will be sent to Night phase without a lynch.

Insta-lynch is on and will be achieved at more than 50% of all living players as normal.

There will additionally be a minimum threshold of votes needed to lynch a player, which shall comprise no less than 25% of living players.

  • If a day goes to deadline and no candidate has the required number of votes, there will be an automatic No Lynch.
  • Otherwise, the candidate with the highest number of votes above the threshold will be lynched.
  • If there is a tie at or above this amount, a KitB shall occur with the tied players.

Lynch votes must be bold and red, like this. You may also prefix your vote specifically for maximum distinction, e.g Lynch: Kaivêran. (Prefixing your vote is also handy for making your vote count on devices in which you can't easily use color formatting.)

CARDFLIP CREDITS:

For every 4 deaths that occur, the town gets a Cardflip Credit, enabling players to publicly reveal a player's role. Should any Cardflip Credits be in play, the town may vote to cardflip someone during the Day in exchange for 1 Credit. This voting takes place much the same manner as a lynch, with the following caveats:

  • Results are immediate: as soon as a majority vote ("insta-cardflip") is achieved, the cardflip will go through.
  • Should multiple Credits be accumulated, players may vote for more than one cardflip per Day. Should a insta be achieved in this situation, the selected player is cardflipped, all cardflip votes are reset, and the process starts again.
  • If there are still Credits in play, but no (more) instas take place during the Day and the deadline passes without any candidate reaching the minimum vote threshold, the unused credits carry over to the next Day. Players may explicitly vote NO CARDFLIP to save their credits.

Cardflips in the game reveal an edited copy of the flipped player's Role PM, detailing their abilities and faction allegiances. Once cardflipped, a dead player cannot be revived.

Cardflip votes must be bold and blue, like this. You may also prefix your vote for maximum distinction, e.g Cardflip: Kaivêran.

If these rules and mechanics seem arbitrary, I assure you they are not. I have thought about this long and hard looking for possible exploits (and maximum fun potential!), and I feel this is the best way the game can be run.

OTHER NOTES:

I would advise those who die to continue following the game thread. It'll be fun, and the game may not be completely over for you. Please note, however, that normal rules of engagement apply. There shall be no dead-to-living contact, nor dead-to-dead contact, unless specifically allowed and moderated by ME, the host. Violations are a modkillable offense.

Due to the extreme complexity of this game, I have put the role explanations on a separate page. Located here:
