Mystery Game

Page history last edited by Kaivêran 9 years, 11 months ago

A mystery game is when the list of roles is hidden from the players, as contrasted with the default "open" game, where all the roles are known in advance.  Each player is still told their role (unless it's like Clue) and the game still has to be sent to some TWC to be approved.  Obviously, those TWC members cannot play the game.

An advantage to the mystery game is that it allows people to be more creative in designing setups and to try out unusual role combinations, even those that would be otherwise "broken"; since the setup is not subject to player scrutiny, it is unlikely that any strategy that would "break the game" would be found, even if it did potentially exist. An obvious disadvantage is that the setup can only be run once (and therefore, prospective hosts should consider a thorough review, to make sure it is the game you want it to be.)

Generally in the setup design, humans should be given more of an advantage, as the information gap between humans and wolves is greater than usual, and wolves have greater license to fakeclaim and run gambits (barring powers/roles on the human side that can effectively bust them.)

A semi-mystery game is when only part of the game is hidden.  A gimmick may be hidden, only part of the roles, or all the roles, but some definite information about the composition of the setup is revealed. Most commonly, players are told the number of blues, reds, and greens, while keeping the details of each role secret. Another approach is to list out all the possible roles that could be in the game - but leaving the players without the knowledge of how many of each role there is, or if certain listed roles do not actually exist.
